Jason Newsted will see the debut of his first major international exhibition of his contemporary art, entitled “RAWK,” taking place next month at of Art New York at Pier 94. The former Metallica bassist will see his work go up alongside legendary rock and roll photographer Bob Gruen's limited edition silkscreen prints entitled “ROCKERS” beginning May 3 and running through May 7 as part of the kick off to New York Art Week.

Presented by Art Miami, the leading producer of international contemporary and modern art fairs, this is the third edition of Art New York and the second edition of CONTEXT New York at Pier 94. According to a press release, it will showcase more than 120 international contemporary and modern galleries from 50 countries, representing more than 1,200 artists who have exhibited at Art Miami, Art Basel, Design Miami, The Armory Show, Masterpiece, Expo Chicago and Art Dealers Association of America’s The Art Show among others.

Fifty percent of the proceeds from the exhibit will be donated to the Perry J. Cohen Foundation by GLE. Both Newsted and Gruen will be onhand for a special symposium on Saturday, May 6.

Newsted began painting following a shoulder injury, and he told Classic Rock Revisited in 2013 that he has three art studios across the country.

"I just do acrylic and inks," he said. "I don’t do oils. I do sculptures. When my shoulder surgery occurred I was one armed from about 2004 through 2008. I had two surgeries on the right shoulder and one on the left. I learned how to paint one handed each time, so now all paintings are done with both hands. The text is done with my left hand and all of the painting is done with the right. I use both sides of my brain."
